I can honestly say that there couldn't possibly be a better guide to go with! Sergio is a wealth of knowledge, an excellent storyteller, truly loves nature, and cares for his clients too. " We just returned from Peru and I wanted to let you know that our Choquequirao trek was simply amazing! It is a difficult hike but not too strenuous if you are in good physical condition. The geography is breathtaking and when we arrived at the ruins in the early morning, we were the only ones there. Even later in the afternoon, there were only about 10 or so people. (Our trek was private – just my husband and I.)

We are very glad we decided to do the trek in 5 days instead of 4. Personally, I don’t think we would have enjoyed it as much if we did it in only 4 days. In addition to the hard hike to Choquequirao and back, once you are there, just walking to and from the different sectors is physically demanding. I say spend the extra money for the extra day. At least you can enjoy these beautiful ruins for an entire day without being rushed or in physical discomfort.

I would also recommend that you try the alternative route, returning through Huanipaca. The scenery was really nice and much different than the trail back to Cachora. There are some steep down and up sections, but definitely not any more difficult than the standard route. We saw only one other small group of hikers going the opposite way on the trail during those last two days.

Our trek organizer – Pachatusantrek – well… I truly cannot say enough positive things about them! Everything was perfect. The pre-planning with Jessica was great and we even had to change our itinerary because of a transportation strike. Sergio, our guide, is an avid reader, extremely knowledgeable and speaks perfect English. We learned so much about Andean and Incan history, mythology and symbology, and, the night sky in the southern hemisphere. As we walked along, he took the time to stop to point out different plants, trees, insects, birds and animals. We enjoyed his company greatly and had many laughs.

I like to joke about Teo, our cook, having a magic stove/oven in the cooking tent, but really, that only minimizes the talent and effort it takes to prepare and serve such delicious food in the middle of nowhere. It was as good and fresh and gourmet as anything I could get in our local college town known for its great restaurants. Even as a picky vegetarian, I was completely blown away by how delicious and plentiful all the meals and snacks were. Teo even baked us a heart-shaped wedding anniversary cake, nicely decorated and with real frosting.

All of Pachatusantrek’s equipment was brand new and in perfect condition. We even got to enjoy hot showers each day thanks to their PVC solar shower bag and they supplied all-natural and biodegradable toiletries. The support staff of assistants and horsemen was also wonderful. The transportation vans were newer, very nice and clean.

Our trek ended in the small resort complex of Villa Los Loros – a beautiful little sanctuary with many colorful flowers and butterflies. Marco and his wife served us a delicious lunch in their restaurant (included in the cost of the trek). My husband very much enjoyed the trout he had caught just minutes before from their farm in the Tambobamba River.

Thank you, Jessica, Sergio and staff at Pachatusantrek, for making our trip to Choquequirao an unforgettable, once in a lifetime experience for us. We spent two weeks in Peru (Cusco, MP, SV, Puno, Titicaca Islands) and the trek was hands-down the best part. "
