Classic Inka Trail to Machu Picchu 4d/3n

Long Treks

Classic Inka Trail to Machu Picchu 4d/3n

The legendary Inka Trail or Qapaq Ñam crossed South America from Quito in Ecuador all the way to La Paz in Bolivia, traversing the Andes mountain range. The section of this trail that we will cover will take us to the magnificent sacred city of Machu Picchu, in a trip where history, geography, local flora and the environment will fill our senses and take our breath away. With each step we will appreciate the ingenuity of the Andean people, to survive in this harsh environment and to work the granite rock forming this incredible path through the mountains. Leaving behind them evidence of their greatness.

Choquekiraw Trek 5d/4n

Long Treks

Choquekiraw Trek 5d/4n

Starting at: US$ 620.00

The archaeological complex of Choqekiraw (3,061 masl), which means “Cradle of Gold”, is located on the north-eastern divide between the Cuzco and Apurimac regions, in the Vilcabamba mountain range.

Choqekirau was possibly built by the Inka Tupac Yupanqui, as an important ceremonial centre, and it became the last refuge of the Inka rebels, led by Manco Inca II, in their escape from the invaders across the Vilcabamba range.

Here we can find squares, water fountains, and ritual centres, as well as structures of Inca architecture and impressive systems of agricultural terraces, with irrigation channels which provide evidence of highly developed hydraulic engineering.
Recent studies propose that Choquekiraw was the feminine counterpart of the Sacred Citadel of Machu Picchu, fitting within the concept of duality and sacred geography, under which Andean civilisation has developed.

Within the terracing system, the site called Pacchayoc stands out, from where you can see the ravine (and waterfall) which provides water to Choqequiraw, as well as a great system of terraces, which probably go close to the Apurimac River. We can also find a ceremonial rock for rituals related to agriculture.

Another important sector, known as “Llamayoq”, features a system of terraces decorated with llamas and a shepherd, drawn with white stones, and with a view of the Qoriwayrachina snow-capped peak. An interesting peculiarity of these terraces is the vertical positioning of the stones in the wall containing them.

Temperatures are from 5ºC / 41 ºF at night, to 23ºC / 73ºF at midday. The climate is semi-dry / semi-humid; crossing the valley of the Apurimac River the humidity comes from the environment. Around the archaeological complex, the climate is that of the rainforest. The seasons are divided into dry (April – October) and rains (November – march), with regular precipitation.

Salkantay Trek 5d/4n

Long Treks

Salkantay Trek 5d/4n

Starting at: US$ 768.00

The Apu Salkantay (6,264 masl / 20551 ft) is a sacred mountain in the Vilcabamba range, located to the south of the Sacred Citadel of Machu Picchu.

This mountain, together with the Southern Cross, served as a point of reference for astrological observation developed by the Incas (from Machu Picchu), especially during the June and December solstices. Its location supports the concept of “sacred geography”, under which the Incas developed Andean civilisation.

The best time of year to visit the Apu Salkantay is during the Winter, from April to October. Temperatures range from -5º C / 41 ºF to 23º C / 73 ºF; with a scarce chance of rain. The maximum altitude we will reach is 4643 masl / 15233 ft at the Salkantay pass, with the minimum altitude being 2000 masl / 6562 ft in the town of Aguas Calientes.

The ecological levels we will experience will vary from Quechua, Suni, Puna and Janca (inter-Andean valleys and rainforest) with all their characteristic flora and fauna. All of this amid spectacular geography.

Lares - Ccachin Trek 3d/2n

Short Treks

Lares - Ccachin Trek 3d/2n

Starting at: US$ 398.00

The Lares Valley is famous for the textile art produced in the communities using techniques and tools which date to pre-Inka times.

The tools used to make the weavings have been inherited from the time when textiles appeared in the Andes (approx. 4000BC). The colours used to decorate their textiles come from plants, oxides, earth and minerals which enrich the finished product. The iconography represented in their textiles serves to transmit basic knowledge through oral means, as it has been done for thousands of years.

On this adventure, we combine the marvellous landscapes of the Andes and their snow-capped peaks, with the living culture developed within them.

We will pass ecological levels such as Quechua, Suni and Puna; with all their local flora and fauna and where we will see the development of economic activities, such as agriculture and the rearing of camelids, which are the main source of income for the local population.

Ausangate trek 5d/4n

Long Treks

Ausangate trek 5d/4n

Starting at: US$ 704.00

Within the Cosmo vision developed by the Incas, the Apu Ausangate is the most important sacred mountain in the area surrounding the city of Cusco, indeed in all of the altiplano, which is also home to Lake Titicaca, the place of origin of the Incas, according to the legend of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo. This sacred mountain is located to the south east of the city of Cuzco, capital of the Inca Empire.

This trek offers spectacular and beautiful views of the puna region, where the glaciers surround us in all directions. We will walk on the shores of lakes, and Andean cameloids will accompany us on parts of our journey.

Full day Apu Pachatusan Trek

Short Treks

Full day Apu Pachatusan Trek

Starting at: US$ 109.00

This trek offers us beautiful scenery, and a chance to appreciate how people make the best use of the different ecological levels which we will encounter, such as the quechua, suni and puna.

The Apu (Sacred Mountain) Pachatusan is one of the guardian mountains of the city of Cusco, situated to the east, land of the Antis. Its partner mountain is no less than the Apu Huancaure, known to be one of the first Inca settlements established when they arrived in the Cusco Valley.

This mountain has a very special profile which we can appreciate. We will also try to decipher the enigmatic archaeological site of Tipon, where a fresh water spring irrigates a ritual terrace complex; and we will see an impressive stone water channel flowing down the side of the mountain.

We can appreciate interesting petroglyphs, vestiges of an ancestral understanding of time and space, and another concept of the term Pacha.
Pachatusan comes from the terms in the Quechua language, Pacha which refers to time and space; and Tusay which literally means “to prop up”, or “support”. We can therefor speculate that its meaning is the first to support time and space (eternity).
