o Tours of Pikillaqta and Andahuaylillas
Tipon
Located 20 Km (12.43 miles) to the south-east of the city of Cuzco (approximately 40 minutes), Tipon is a complex of agricultural terraces and stone water channels.
Our guide and private transport will pick us up from our hotel to begin our tour of the Southern Valley, we will start with Tipon (approximately 40 minutes from Cuzco). Tipon was a place dedicated to religious worship and agricultural experimentation; we will visit the main plaza, the agricultural terraces, and its impressive stone water channels.
After breakfast, our private transport will pick us up to take us to the Sacred Valley of the Inkas, visiting the complex of Pisac on the way, located 33 km/ 20 miles from the city of Cuzco. Pisac is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley, as it was during Inka times, the city was built in the form of an animal; Pisac means partridge, and it has the same shape.
Today we will discover the other part of the Sacred Valley of the Inkas, known as Moray, a town famous for its large complex of unusual Inka ruins, located to the north-east of Cuzco and close to the town of Maras.
The site at Moray is made up of enormous circular terraces which were possibly used to study the effects of different climatic conditions on the crops. The depth of the holes (the largest is 30 meters deep) create a variation of temperatures of 15ºC between the top and the bottom levels. As in other Inka sites, it also has a sophisticated irrigation system which provided water for the plants.
In the afternoon we have a Cuzco City tour, including the Main Plaza, where the Cathedral is found, impressive because of its paintings from the Cusqueña school.
Next we will visit the Sun Temple, known as the Qorikancha, this enclosure was one of the most important constructions in the time of the Inkas, its walls were covered with gold plates and it was built to honor the Sun God (Inti).
After breakfast we will begin our tour of the Sacred Valley of the Inkas, passing by Pisac to see its famous typical arts market, where we can see hand-made crafts from the communities in the area.
After enjoying our lunch we head to Ollantaytambo (2792 masl / 9160 ft). Ollantaytamo was an important fortress, due to its great surrounding walls, it was actually used as a storage city, strategically located in the Sacred Valley. It is a living Inka town, and its narrow stone streets make it an attractive and relaxing place.
