Sunset at Rumiwasi
Chinkana in Rumiwasi
This short trek allows us to better acclimatise to the altitude of Cusco, and also enjoy peaceful and relaxing scenery, very close to the city.
At dawn, we leave in the direction of the Archaeological Park of Sacsayhauman, Yunkaypata sector, passing the archaeological complex of Tambomachay.
We begin our walk towards the city of Cuzco, through a typical quechua landscape, in the community of Yunkaypata, at 3736 masl / 12257 feet.
Leaving the community, we will walk along a flat path which offers us amazing views of the farmland, with crops as varied as corn, tarwi, barley etc. As we continue the snow-capped peak of the Apu (Sacred Mountain) Ausangate comes into view (the principal guardian mountain of the city of Cuzco).
Around us we can see native flora, with the beautiful Qeuρa bush standing out, as well as a variety of flowers.
We continue our walk downhill to find ourselves at the Ccorococha lake, surrounded by a eucalyptus forest, a species that was introduced after the Spanish occupation.
In this beautiful place we will make an offering to Pachamana and the Apus; asking for protection and permission to carry out our next adventures. Here we will also enjoy a rest and our snacks.
Upon our descent we will have the opportunity to see the mountain Apu Pachatusan, with its singular reptilian profile. At the base of the mountain the archaeological site of Tipon is found; a center with diverse functions, predominant among them the ritual worship of water and fertility. Here we can find various petroglyphs, especially one which represents a reptile. This is the theme of a different excursion.
We will arrive at the archaeological site of Kusikallanka to later visit Rumiwasi, a site where we can visit a chinkana, as well as structures built using ecological architecture developed by Andean man throughout history.
After a short descent we find ourselves in the city of Cuzco, in the traditional neighborhood of San Jeronimo, where our transport will pick us up to take us to our respective hotels.
